As a garden design firm we are involved solely with the design of the garden – rather than landscaping the garden – taking into account garden aspect, site conditions and planting requirements. We aim to create gardens with a sense of place, utilising our extensive knowledge of planting, materials and design. If you think a design is a step too far for you, we recommend taking a look at our landscaping page for further details.
The garden design process includes a number of phases, starting with concept plans, which can number between 2 and 4 stages. Following this is the construction drawings phase, where we compile all the technical drawings and specification needed to build the garden. It can then take 2-3 weeks for landscapers to return quotes to build the garden. All in all, it may take 2-3 months before a landscape contractor is instructed to build the garden. The landscapers themselves will then often have a 3-month lead time, so it is best to start planning the garden for next spring. However, in exceptional circumstances, we are happy to consider ‘fast-tracking’ a garden design project.
Certain elements in a garden design will require planning, such as tennis courts, outbuildings that are not within permitted development, swimming pools within the grounds of a listed building/conservation area and large-scale works that come under engineering works. We are able to compile the relevant plans needed to clear planning conditions and also recommend employing the services of a planning consultant on larger scale projects.
The first thing on your list of requirements is likely to be a low-maintenance garden. With decades of experience in garden maintenance, we are well placed to design gardens with high impact, whilst keeping maintenance requirements to a minimum. However, there is no such thing as a NO-maintenance garden. With this in mind, we endeavour to match up our clients with dedicated and experienced gardeners. For those that wish to maintain their own gardens, we provide detailed maintenance schedules.
